Antique 1893 Letter Handwritten Paris Philadelphia Hottinguer Clay Postage Stamp
Antique handwritten letter and envelope originating from Hottinguer & Cie, Paris, France and sent to Harry G. Clay, Esquire, Effingham B. Morris, Esquire, 522 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA. Philadelphia postmark dated August 22, 1893 on reverse of envelope. Paris postmark and canceled postage stamp on front of envelope. The letter reads. “Gentlemen, We beg to own the receipt of your favor of 1 Aug enclosing a cheque on ourselves for F 31,087.50 which we place to the credit of Mme. la Contesse de Boisguilbert. We enclose Mme. Boisguilbert’s receipt for said amount. I remain, gentlemen, yours very truly, Hottinguer.” This item is from a collection of correspondence from the estate office of William Bingham in Philadelphia. It is related to the inheritance received by Bingham’s descendants, either directly or through marriage. In 1893, Baron Rodolohe Hottinguer (1835-1920) was a banker that ran his family-owned French bank, Messieurs Hottinguer & Cie. The signature on this letter has *NOT* been authenticated but *MAY* be that of Rodolohe Hottinguer. The bank Rougemont, Hottinger & Cie was launched in Paris by Jean-Conrad Hottinger in 1786. In or around 1799, Jean-Conrad added a 'u' to his family name to maintain the correct pronunciation of the name in French. “William Bingham served as a Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress (1786-1788) and as a U.S. Senator (1795-1801). His will, dated January 31, 1804, was duly proved and filed in the Register’s Office in Philadelphia. After the original Trustees died, the estate was then represented by five other Trustees. They were: Joseph Reed Ingersoll, John Craig Miller, and three of Mr. Bingham’s grandsons. Subsequent Trustees were his two sons-in-law, Alexander Baring, (afterwards Lord Ashburton) and Henry Baring, and his three friends, Robert Gilmore, of Baltimore, Thomas Mayne Willing and Charles Willing Hare of Philadelphia.” Condition is used. There is a tiny hole in the letter and one of the fold creases. The envelope has been slit open on top. There is overall wear, soiling and creasing due to age and use. Please zoom all photos for condition details. Envelope measures approximately 5-7/8 x 3-3/8 inches. The letter fully unfolded measures approximately 15-1/2 x 10-3/4 inches.
